How to Tell if Your Sump Pump Needs Replacement or Repair in Your Home

When the weather takes a turn for the worst, flooding can easily occur. If that happens, water entering your basement will flow to the lowest point, which is why a sump pump is installed at the lowest point of the basement. The pump removes water, forcing it back outside, to prevent flooding indoors. Every few years, your sump pump should be replaced. You’ll notice the following signs of an old pump.

4 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Sump Pump

On average, homeowners spend around $500 to repair their sump pump. If your pump is old, there’s no telling how many repair sessions will be required throughout the year. The cost can quickly accumulate for the worse. Sometimes, replacement is the smarter option. Some signs replacement is the way to go include:

  • Strange sounds – Sounds typically indicate worn or damaged parts.
  • Vibrations – Pumps with bent or damaged impellers may vibrate excessively when in operation.
  • Irregular Cycling – If the pump is cycling on and off at irregular intervals, even during heavy rainstorms, something is wrong. A float switch may need adjustment or wiring malfunctions may be present.
  • Rust – If you spot visible rust, it’s time for your pump to go!

3 Times Sump Pump Repairs Are Likely Appropriate

If your sump pump is relatively new, buying a replacement so soon would not make sense. Often, repairs are more than enough. If your sump pump requires repairs, you’ll notice:

  • Mold or Mildew – Sump pumps are constantly exposed to water, and therefore vulnerable to mold and mildew. Over time, buildup leads to musty smells.
  • Stuck Float – A stuck float or switch may lead to water levels in the pit rising over the acceptable amount.
  • Noise – Excessive noise during operation should be checked over. Sump pumps are not silent, but do not create loud noises either.
