Types of Air Conditioning Systems

It’s a common misconception that there are only two air conditioning systems: central air and window units. Determine which option is right for your home by speaking with experienced HVAC professionals.

In reality, the central air conditioning system category can be broken down into four parts:

  • Split systems
  • Heat pumps
  • Packaged units
  • Ductless mini-split systems.

The most common are split systems and packaged central air conditioners, though ductless mini-split systems are becoming increasingly more common in households. A packaged unit, first off, includes the evaporator, condenser, and compressor in a single unit. This unit is typically placed on the roof of a commercial building or concrete slab outside. A split system, on the other hand, includes an evaporator coil housed in a cabinet, which helps remove heat and moisture. Outside, a metal case contains a condenser coil, which will release heat, and a compressor, to pump refrigerant between both coils.

    Traditional Central Air Conditioning Systems

A central air conditioner operates on electricity and will remove heat from the air in your home. When the thermostat–which is installed along a wall inside your home–signals the unit to lower the temperature, an internal sequence begins.

First, the air-handling unit will start, drawing air from each room through return-air ducts. Dust is removed once the air moves through a clean filter. Supply ducts subsequently re-route the fresh air back into each room. At this point, the air has been cooled considerably. You’ll now feel the refreshing breeze and escape the outdoor heat. It’s that simple!

Is a Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioning System Right for You?

When it comes to cooling your home, the industry is steadily advancing. One of the most recent advances is the ductless mini-split air conditioning system. A ductless unit offers numerous benefits over more traditional methods. Although expensive upfront, a ductless mini-split air conditioning system does not require bulky or costly ductwork running through your home.

The main advantage is size and flexibility. Many models can handle four indoor air-handling units connected to a single outdoor unit. These units can subsequently manage four zones or rooms. Each zone can have its own thermostat, allowing members of your family or office to control their own comfort levels with ease. The lack of ductwork means the unit is more efficient and experiences less energy loss overall.

What Size of a Central Air Conditioning Unit Do You Need?

Central air conditioning units come in varying sizes. These sizes depend on the overall square footage of your home. To determine the size you need, it’s best to call a professional and let them assess your home. The only way to effectively choose one is to measure the total square footage and install the appropriate kind and amount of systems for reliable cool air.
